Everything is on the line when your Servicemember deploys
overseas. Since they may not come
home. Unhurt and without being
traumatized is the hope. When the
reunion of family happens in just a guess on a unit’s schedule.
Months are great big gulps of lifetime when you are
little. Talking on the phone for real is
strange and super important since Daddy left to go get the bad guy. Where is far, far away? Grandma says your Mom is a hero. They call her job a logistician, she says she
drives a big truck.
Spouses see Humvees exploding on the news from roadside
bombs, reporters call them improvised explosive devices and they enter into dreams. Wives think their husbands travel on the same
roads, which they may. More likely your
loved ones are asleep, off duty/ bored to tears.
…
When things are lousy at home doing your job downrange gets
a lot harder. Kids don’t want to talk on
the phone or listen to anyone; act out and start cussing at teachers and
getting into fights. Maybe Jodie’s
spouse back on the block spends the directly deposited pay really fast. Or maybe you can go on vacation with your
family separation allowance and combat pay.
If you get home.
Marriages with fidelity problems get worse. Not making love for a year, when the two of
you have only been together a short while, puts your panties in a twist. Kisses and leg rubs on the carousel make your
daydreams. Some spouses accuse, others
support with care packages.
Some Soldiers have no one to write to, receive nothing at
mail call. Loneliness magnifies when you
are on the other side of the world.
There’s too much time to think.
No feasible way home but to wait.
A photograph makes you cry for no reason.
